Hydrovac Support for Contractors

Not every project requires a dedicated hydrovac truck from start to finish. Sometimes you need a utility exposed before trenching, a crossing verified before installation, or an existing line uncovered so your crew can complete a repair.

Artisan Group provides hydrovac excavation as a standalone service for plumbing contractors, excavation companies, utility contractors, and general contractors.

We can perform the specialized excavation while your crew handles the installation, repair, or remaining construction work. Your company retains its project leadership and client relationship.

Whether you need a single verification hole or excavation support across multiple locations, contact us with your project scope and schedule.

Understanding the method

What Is Hydrovac Excavation?

Hydrovac excavation, also known as hydro excavation, uses pressurized water to loosen soil and a powerful vacuum to remove the resulting material into a debris tank.

Unlike conventional excavation, the process does not rely on a metal bucket or cutting edge to break through the ground immediately surrounding buried infrastructure.

This allows soil to be removed incrementally, giving operators greater control when exposing existing pipes, conduits, and other underground facilities.

Hydrovac is particularly useful when the location or depth of an existing utility must be confirmed before mechanical excavation continues.

It is not a replacement for an excavator on every project. Conventional equipment remains appropriate for bulk excavation, while hydrovac provides a more controlled method for targeted digging and utility exposure.

Hydrovac applications

Hydrovac Applications

Utility Daylighting & Potholing

Before trenching or installing new underground infrastructure, contractors often need to verify the exact location and depth of existing utilities.

Hydrovac allows small, targeted excavations to expose buried facilities, helping crews identify utility crossings, confirm clearances, and plan subsequent excavation around what is actually in the ground.

This is especially useful where multiple utilities share a corridor or where surface markings alone cannot establish the depth of an existing line.

Water & Sewer Line Exposure

Underground plumbing repairs frequently require exposing an existing pipe before its condition, connections, or repair requirements can be fully assessed.

Hydrovac provides controlled soil removal around buried water and sewer lines, reducing the need for mechanical digging immediately adjacent to the pipe.

Artisan can provide excavation for another plumbing contractor or perform the associated underground plumbing work when both services are needed. Explore our water and sewer line services.

Excavation Around Existing Utilities

Gas lines, electrical conduits, communications cables, and underground plumbing often occupy the same work area.

When excavation must proceed near infrastructure that needs to remain intact, hydrovac allows operators to remove soil with greater control than conventional mechanical digging.

Equipment settings, utility type, and existing facility conditions must still be considered. Hydrovac reduces mechanical contact but does not eliminate the possibility of damage.

Precision Excavation in Sensitive Areas

Excavation near foundations, established landscaping, existing improvements, or congested utility corridors may require a smaller, more controlled excavation footprint.

Hydrovac can remove material from targeted areas without requiring a conventional excavator bucket to work directly against nearby infrastructure.

Depending on equipment reach and site access, the vacuum hose may also allow excavation where positioning larger equipment directly over the work area is impractical.

Washington County ground conditions

Hydrovac Excavation in Southern Utah's Ground Conditions

Excavation in Washington County can involve loose desert sand, compacted soils, clay, caliche, and rock. Ground conditions may vary considerably between natural soils, imported fill, and previously developed areas.

Caliche can form a dense, cemented layer that is difficult to excavate. Certain soils may also be susceptible to settlement when exposed to water, making the excavation method and water management important considerations.

Hydrovac can provide precise soil removal in suitable conditions, but heavily cemented material, solid rock, and water sensitive soils may require alternative methods or additional precautions.

Artisan Group's broader excavation capabilities allow us to evaluate where hydrovac is appropriate and where conventional excavation may be the better approach.

More than a single excavation method

Hydrovac, Plumbing & Excavation Under One Company

Artisan Group operates hydrovac equipment alongside its plumbing and excavation services.

A buried water main repair, for example, may require exposing the existing pipe, excavating additional working space, completing the plumbing repair, and restoring the excavation.

Rather than sourcing separate contractors for each phase, property owners and project managers can work with Artisan across the required scopes.

For other contractors, our hydrovac equipment remains available independently. We can perform the specialized excavation without taking over your plumbing or construction work.

Before digging, we consider the existing infrastructure, access for equipment, the material to be removed, spoil handling, and the clearance needed by the crew that follows. The accepted work and restoration responsibilities are clarified before the excavation proceeds.

Hydrovac Backup for Municipal & Utility Crews

Artisan Group can support cities, municipalities, water districts, utility contractors, and public works teams that need specialized excavation capacity for a defined assignment. That may mean verifying an existing utility before a planned installation, helping expose a failed service, or supplementing a crew during a time sensitive repair.

Additional crew capacity

We can perform targeted daylighting, potholing, or utility exposure while the municipal or prime contractor crew retains control of the project and completes the remaining work.

Planned or urgent requests

Discuss planned work, contingency needs, and urgent support requests with us. Availability, required authorization, utility ownership, site safety, and any procurement or prevailing project requirements are confirmed for each assignment.

We can coordinate with union and nonunion project crews when site and contract requirements allow. Scheduling, authorization, and crew availability are confirmed for the requested assignment.

Planning before excavation

Utility Locates & Excavation Planning

Before excavation begins, underground utilities must be identified and applicable locate procedures completed.

Utah's Blue Stakes 811 system provides a process for notifying participating utility operators of planned excavation. Utility markings indicate approximate facility locations, but do not establish the exact depth or configuration of every buried line.

Hydrovac can be used to expose marked utilities and verify their position before additional excavation proceeds.

Private utilities may require separate locating, and appropriate excavation precautions remain necessary regardless of the equipment used. Project specific locate, marking, and hand exposure requirements must still be followed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can plumbing contractors hire Artisan for hydrovac excavation only?

Yes. Hydrovac is available as a standalone service. Your company can retain responsibility for the plumbing installation or repair while Artisan handles the requested excavation. We coordinate with your crew, protect your client relationship, and work within the agreed scope.

What is the difference between hydrovac and potholing?

Hydrovac is an excavation method. Potholing is a specific application in which a small opening is excavated to expose a buried utility and verify its location or depth. Hydrovac is one method used to perform potholing.

Can hydrovac damage underground utilities?

Hydrovac reduces the need for mechanical contact, but it is not risk free. Water pressure, nozzle selection, operating technique, and the type and condition of the buried utility all matter.

Does hydrovac work in caliche or rocky ground?

Performance depends on the density and composition of the material. Some compacted soils can be loosened with water, while heavily cemented caliche or solid rock may require mechanical excavation or other methods.

Can hydrovac replace an excavator?

Not for every application. Hydrovac is useful for targeted excavation and utility exposure. Conventional excavators are generally better suited to moving large volumes of material. Many underground projects benefit from both methods.

Do you provide hydrovac services for homeowners?

Yes. Residential applications may include exposing buried water and sewer lines, accessing underground connections, and excavation around existing improvements. The appropriate method depends on site access and project conditions.

Can you support municipal or public works crews?

We review requests from cities, utility providers, and prime contractors for potholing, utility exposure, and backup capacity. A planned or urgent request must be reviewed for site access, crew availability, contract requirements, and authorization before mobilization.

Does a Blue Stakes locate establish a utility's exact depth?

No. Surface markings generally indicate approximate horizontal locations, not verified depth. Targeted excavation can help physically expose a facility. Private lines may require separate locating, and all applicable excavation precautions remain in effect. See the Blue Stakes Excavators' Guide.

How is hydrovac excavation priced?

Pricing depends on mobilization, the size and number of exposures, soil conditions, access, time on site, and material handling. We review your proposed scope and discuss what is included before the work is authorized. We accept major credit cards, ACH and Venmo. For qualifying private property projects, financing options are available.
